After dropping the girls off at school and my car at the shop for some air conditioning repair, Toben and I went searching for the newest location of the Tattered Cover bookstore. Turns out it's in Highland's Ranch, just minutes from the girls' school. After getting my soy vanilla latte and meeting some nice women who were knitting--more in a sec--I went searching for A Breath of Snow and Ashes by Diana Gabaldon. It doesn't come out in paperback until tomorrow, and then it's the big $15 one. I really want the smaller $7.99 version--to match all the other books in the series I own. So I guess I'll look for it in the library and then buy the trade paperback when it comes out. (My friend Sarah works at Amazon...I'll have to see if she can help me out!)
Even though they didn't have it, the trip to Tattered Cover is well worth it. We used to visit the store in Cherry Creek (it's moved) and loved to eat at their restaurant. Not sure if the restaurant is still around. This is a wonderful, wonderful bookstore...I could spend all day. But we cut ourswelves off after only about 20 minutes to go wander through the backyard of our new house and talk about landscaping. Then we went to the La-z-boy store to look at sofas. By this time, I was done with my latte and ready to go home--quickly!
(The nice knitting ladies gave me the scoop on knit shops in town. The one I knew of has closed, but they recommended one right behind the Tattered Cover--String--and another pretty near my new house. Can't remember what that one's called--Knit Kitty, Kitty Knits--something about a cat and knitting. I'm excited to go exploring and check them out soon!)
Then I drove to Kristen's house and we headed out to Michael's so she could buy some stuff for a project. I looked around, but mostly held sweet Ava and tried to get her to make a fish face. Then it was time for lunch, so we grabbed some chwarma sandwiches and headed back to her house. Yum, yum and thank you, Kristen, for buying my lunch!
I got home just in time to get Toben, drive back to school to get the girls, pick up my car, fill Toben's car with gas, and head to the pool so the kids could swim before coming back home and grilling flank steak for dinner. I made green beans with carmelized onions too--I could eat plates full.
So, now, phew!, I'm going to tuck the kids in bed and then pick up my knitting for the first time in weeks and be soothed by the sound of my needles clicking away.
But before I do, here's how I make the green beans:
Green Beans with Carmelized Onions1 red onion
fresh green beans, stems snapped
olive oil
kosher saltFill a big pot with water and set to boil while snapping the green beans. When water has boiled, add green beans and cook for 5-8 minutes, until tender.
Cut onion in half, then slice thinly. Heat olive oil in a heavy-bottomed pan and saute onions until very brown, about 15-20 minutes.
Drain beans and add to pan with onions. Sprinkle with kosher salt and heat through, stirring well. Serve.
(You can also fry up some bacon, cook the onion in the bacon grease, and then sprinkle the beans with crumbled bacon. Super yummy!)
