Audrey and Emma were so excited for school yesterday--our first science experiment. So when it was time to choose what to do first after our Bible lesson, they both yelled "SCIENCE!"
(When do we stop thinking that science is fun? When did it become something we dreaded, rather than looked forward to? Just wondering...)
So we got out of experiment book, made copies of the experiment worksheet, dug through our boxes of supplies for aluminum foil, tape, dry cells (batteries), and flashlight bulbs. We watched the experiment on the science DVD, and got to work.
The instructions were mostly for how to make these aluminum ribbons to conduct electricity. Once those were made and the supplies in place, the instructions said to use them to make the light bulb light up using trial and error.
So we talked about "trial and error"--about learning what doesn't work in order to learn what does work. The girls drew diagrams to show what didn't work, recording their discovery in their scientific notes.
And after a lot of tries and configurations that didn't work, we had success!
Light!
I couldn't help but think of Genesis and God's saying, "Let there be light!" Made in his image, Audrey and Emma were thrilled at their discovery and took such joy in their success. They talked about it for the rest of the day and can't wait for next week's experiment.
I think we'll be watching this today:
You can find the lyrics here.
What fun! I'm more than a little envious that you are homeschooling...! It's awesome...and the girls (including YOU!) are obviously having fun. And for the record...I LOVE Schoolhouse Rock...I'm humming the tune now!

My son did the same thing once, here at home, just tinkering around with a battery and lightbulb. Such fun.
