I'm out here on the patio this morning, sitting on my new loveseat, sipping coffee and enjoying the hint of coolness in the air. (It smells like cows this morning in Gilbert, Arizona, but I'm ignoring that part.)
I've been studying the Feast of Trumpets/Rosh Hashana this morning some. It's this weekend and I'd really like for us to celebrate it as a family. We're headed to San Diego on Friday morning, so I'm not quite sure how that'll happen, so we'll see. Maybe we'll do our feast on Thursday--a day early, but oh well. (Note to self, get out the bread starter to bake bread in all the fun shapes required!)
(If the feasts sound interesting to you, be sure to check out these two books in my Amazon shop. I'd recommend them both in a heart beat.)
What's really on my mind is this: Psalm 103 (what the girls and I are memorizing right now as part of our Bible curriculum) says this:
The LORD is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in love.
All too often, I am slow to love and abounding in anger. I hate that.
More than anything, I want to be like Jesus. To follow his example--especially at home as I love my family. But my natural inclination is to get this one completely upside down and backwards.
O Abba Father,
Please change me to be like you. To be what I cannot be on my own and in my own power. Make me slow to anger and abounding in love today. As I teach the girls. As we work together. As I parent and discipline and hang out with them. Stop me in my tracks when I get off track. Fill me with your Spirit and your mighty power to be and do what you desire.
Whatever it takes, make me like you.
My prayer this morning too!

That's always a great prayer. I tend to get those upside down, too, but my heart longs to get it right. With God's grace...

I needed that... I'm so slow to love and have anger that doesn't quit...
