I have thought and prayed Psalm 40:17 so many times in the past week, a constant reminder of WHY we memorize Scripture--to actually USE it! Not just to know it and cross it off a list, but to have it become part of my thoughts and prayers.
So here's my verse from last week:
Yet I am poor and needy;
may the Lord think of me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
O my God, do not delay. (Psalm 40:17)
Took me a while this morning to decide what to learn for this week. So as I was flipping through some verse cards, I came across this one and it stood out to me:
Be my _____. Since you are my _____, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. (Psalm 31:2-3)
The actual verse has the phrase "rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me" in the first blank. And "rock and my fortress" in the second blank. But I like the blanks, so that's how I'm going to learn it. Here's why.
God IS my rock of refuge, my strong fortress--just as the verse says. But Scripture also says he's so many other things. And there are times I need to be able to fill in the blank with something else--my Father, my Redeemer, my Helper, my Counselor, my Strength, my Savior, my Hiding Place, my Shepherd, my Healer.
And so I think we can take some liberty with this verse and fill in the blank with whatever we need at the moment. (As long as it's something God has said elsewhere in Scripture that he actually is, of course!)
So today I can pray: Be my Shepherd. Since you are my Shepherd, for the sake of your name lead and guide me.
What has God says he is that you need him to be for you today?
What are you learning this week?
Here's our family's very timely memory verse for the week:
2 Corinthians 10:5
We demolish arguments and every pretenstion that sets itself up against the knowledge of God and WE TAKE CAPTIVE EVERY THOUGHT TO MAKE IT OBEDIENT TO CHRIST.
(the caps are the part my kids will be doing)

Taking every thought captive to obedience in Christ isn't an easy thing to accomplish. I hope your kids see that being lived out in you as you expect it from them. My hunch is, "Yes."
One way we to help us tangibly take every thought captive is learning to hide God's word in our heart. It isn't always easy to hide God's word in our heart... especially when we have a hard time developing the discipline of putting it into our head.
What are some ways you hide God's word in your heart?
